Visas, Border Crossings & more

We’ve done our best to make this guide accurate and helpful, but visa rules change - sometimes suddenly. Always double-check with the official embassy, consulate, or immigration site before you travel.

      • Yellow fever vaccination may be checked if traveling from high-risk areas.

No special restrictions apply for overland crossings — but avoid entering Venezuela from Colombia without thoroughly checking current safety conditions.

  • Most EU passport holders enjoy visa-free access across the same countries as UK and US citizens, with only slight variations in duration.

Keep an eye on border crossing hours and fees when going overland, especially between Costa Rica–Nicaragua and Peru–Bolivia.

      • Panama & Costa Rica: 90 days visa-free; ensure passport has at least 3–6 months validity.

Watch for overland route rules (especially Panama–Colombia: no roads, only flights or sailing options like the San Blas). Avoid border areas in northern Colombia/Venezuela and southern Honduras.

  • Visas, visa-free stays, and extensions vary by country, but these are some good general rules of thumb for backpackers:

    • Visa-Free ≠ Indefinite Stay
Most countries allow 30–90 days without a visa — but overstaying can lead to fines, deportation, or being blacklisted. Always know your deadline.

    • Visa Extensions
In many places (e.g., the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam), you can extend your stay for a fee — but sometimes only once. Extension rules change often, so check locally.

    • Border Runs
Popular in Southeast Asia, but not always reliable. Some countries are cracking down on obvious back-to-back visa runs. Border runs should be spaced out and not used as a permanent residency workaround.

    • Land Border Cautions

      • Peru–Ecuador: Safe and easy.

      • Colombia–Ecuador: Popular crossing, but be cautious of scams.

      • Costa Rica–Nicaragua: Busy and sometimes chaotic; don’t overstay.

      • Thailand–Cambodia: Straightforward, but some scam-prone zones — use official buses or walk to official counters.

      • Panama–Colombia: No road — must fly or take a boat (e.g., via San Blas Islands).

      • Venezuela borders: Avoid unless absolutely necessary — unstable and potentially dangerous.

    • Proof of Onward Travel
Some countries may refuse entry without proof that you’re leaving — especially if you’re entering on a one-way ticket. You can use temporary bookings or services like OnwardTicket for this purpose.

    • Passport Validity
Most countries require at least 6 months’ validity on your passport from your entry date.

    • Vaccination & Health Checks
Some crossings — especially into the Amazon or jungle zones — may ask for proof of yellow fever vaccination. This is especially common if arriving from Brazil, Colombia, or parts of Africa.
